Below is a quick update on legislation moving on the city, state and national levels.
Chicago: Late last month, Alderman Ameya Pawar (47th Ward) announced his plans to advocate for adding abortion and contraception use to the City of Chicago’s non-discrimination policy, similar to a resolution passed in St. Louis earlier this year. We will be watching for the City Council’s movement on this issue and hope you will join in and encourage your aldermen to support it!
Illinois: HB 40, which would protect safe, legal abortion if Roe v. Wade is overturned, has passed committee last month and is on second reading in the Illinois General Assembly. Please call your State Representatives and urge them to vote “YES” on this important bill for healthcare access in our state! Look up your rep here.
National: Debate has begun on the House Floor relating to the repeal of the Affordable Care Act, and its proposed replacement with a plan that harms low-income Americans and seeks to defund essential healthcare resources like Planned Parenthood. Call your members of Congress and demand that they reject this plan and any ACA replacement plan that does not undergo a thorough review from the Congressional Budget Office.
