The health care reform bill has the potential to have a monumental impact on our nation’s health and healthcare. The bill will expand health care coverage to many of our nations neediest and hardest working people. Though the health care reform bill has many positive aspects, one cannot ignore that there is still work to be done to ensure reproductive freedom for all women. Despite the fact that the Stupak-Pitts Amendment was not accepted as written by the House of Representative, the Nelson Amendment drafted by the Senate extends the Hyde Amendment to ensure that no federal funds are used to pay for abortion in the health care bill. Women who need access to abortion the most will find the clinic doors closed to their needs. While the Chicago Chapter of the National Organization for Women supports and celebrates the passage of health care reform, we commit to reopening the clinic doors and reproductive choices for all women in the United States.
