Goal Statement: Research and stay on top of ALL local political issues and actions that affect our issue teams in Chicago.
In looking at current politics, it is the opinion of the VAW team that we want to keep abreast of all issues that bring violence into women’s lives. These include and are not limited to:
- Domestic Violence
- Violence Against Women in the Street Economy
- Gang Violence
- Sexual Violence
- Harassment
- Violence Committed by Police
- Teen Violence (dating violence, bullying, etc)
- Violence Against Incarcerated Women
We are also interested in international concerns specifically war, honor killings, female genital mutilation, and other culturally accepted forms of violence. Since we must focus the efforts of our team we have decided to concentrate 2010 on addressing the 3 following issues.
Police Violence
- This includes but is not limited to keeping abreast of the Abbatte case.
- Examining the role officers play in violence towards immigrant women and other especially vulnerable populations.
Violence Against Women in the Street Economy
- This appears to be an emerging area that CNOW needs to explore further.
- This is an emotionally loaded area, and we must focus on what keeps women most safe.
- First steps include connecting with organizations to understand more about the issue and how we can be of service. (ex. End Demand Illinois)
Teen Violence
- Addressing violence that is experienced by young people is essential.
- Want to explore all issues of violence that face young women, and involve young women in this process.
Our next team meeting is:
Wednesday March 10th at 7pm
Borders at North and Halsted. 2nd floor Cafe
Please join us as we discuss our 2010 initiatives
- Police Brutality
- Teen Violence
- Violence against Sex Workers
