  • CHICAGO NOW helped to draft and pass tougher, comprehensive sexual assault laws in Illinois?

  • Supported and helped the Chicago Residential Building Security Ordinance get enacted?

The Chicago chapter of NOW started in 1900.

CHICAGO NOW has made a difference in a big way for women across Chicago.

In 1998, the chapter took on massive sexual harassment at the Ford auto plants (in Chicago Heights and Torrance). CHICAGO NOW's efforts led to major media coverage (by Renee Ferguson of WMAQ-TV and NBC's newsmagazine Dateline), and most importantly, impacted employment policies and made management take this issue seriously.

The chapter also challenged unequal promotion and pay policies at Dominick's Finer Foods, and brought attention to gender discrimination at this well-known Chicago company.

1999 brings its own challenges. On the CHICAGO NOW 1999 agenda:

  • getting the city council to endorse CEDAW
  • continuing to work on the issues with Ford
  • doubling our membership
  • a major fundraising effort to build the financial standing of the chapter and move towards hiring a full-time executive staff
  • continuing to monitor the actions of the radical pro-life organizations and making women's voices heard in the Chicago election (as well as electing women to public office!).
We urge you to make your contribution, we need your voice, your time and your financial support to continue our list of victories for women!
